| Digital broadcasting is a new way of sending
programs over the airwaves with superior quality video & audio.
There are four types of TV signal broadcast formats:
-
analog NTSC (National Television System Committee) 525 vertical
lines, 60Hz (USA),
-
analog PAL (Phase Alternated by Line) 625 vertical lines, 50Hz (Europe,
Asia & other locales),
-
analog SECAM (Sequentiel Couleur avec Memoire) 625 vertical lines,
50Hz (France, Mideast & other locales), and
-
digital ATSC (Advanced Television System Committee).
NTSC, PAL and SECAM analog transmissions are being phased out, soon to
be discontinued.
ATSC Digital formats are further classified into sub categories according
to the resolution or digital picture quality:
-
Standard Definition (SD) 640 x 480 VGA,
-
Enhanced Definition (ED) 853 x 480, and
-
High Definition (HD) 1024 x 768.
High Definition has two broadcast standard 16:9 ATSC resolutions:
-
720p = 1280 x 720 pixels
-
1080i = 1920 x 1080 pixels
Individual displays scale either of these broadcast signals via internal
circuitry into actual 16:9 display resolutions of 1024 x 768, or 1366 x
768 pixels. These resolutions are what they are due to video chip
technical capabilities rather than the actual resolution of the HD broadcast
signal. It is the quality of the internal circuitry that determines
how good a final image looks on any actual display.
At this time and for the foreseeable future, there are no consumer television
display panels showing native ATSC 1920 x 1080 resolution.
