The way to "read" a Pocket Dosimeter is to just point it at a light source so that you can look through it and see the scale.  The conductive fiber  moves across a very clear well marked scale that produces the reading.

Pocket Dosimeters use an extremely sensitive fiber electrometer type voltmeter and a small volume of air to measure the total amount of radiation to which the instrument has been exposed. A reading may be made at any time by merely looking at a source of light through the eyepiece end of the instrument.  The reading here is at zero.  The particular dosimeter shown is the 200mR model.

A Pocket Dosimeter can be worn like a pen in your pocket or clipped to a belt.  It can be set outside for an hour, to tell the radiation rate.  You don't have to have a radiation meter if you have a dosimeter and are not in a hurry to measure the rate.

If your Dosimeter is going to be used in harsh conditions where scratching of the lens is a concern, we recommend an extra hard synthetic sapphire window to protect the lens even in the toughest of conditions.  Models 138, 138-S, 500 and 500-S are readily available in stock with this option.   Other models can be Special Ordered with this hard window. 

Units shown are rem (R), milli-rem (mR), and milli-Sievert (mSv).  A rem (R) is Roentgen Equivalent in Man, the biologically equivalent amount of ionizing radiation as exposure to one roentgen of high-penetration x-ray.  A milli-rem (mR) is 1/1000th R.  A Sievert (Sv) an international unit equal to 100R; therefore, a milli-Sievert (mSv) is equal to 100mR.

Reset any Pocket Dosimeters with the Dosimeter Charger, available separately.  A single charger can reset a great many dosimeters over and again. 

Rate of exposure can be calculated with any model 138.  Reset dosimeter, then take a six second reading; that amount x10 is mR/min.
