Airline Carry On Baggage Rules . |
| The US Congress and
European Union have established laws to regulate airline baggage size,
weight and content for all commercial carriers. Baggage content for
both carry on and checked baggage is restricted by
TSA
and is subject to inspection at any time.
General limit for Checked Baggage is combined dimensions L x W x D of 62-inches and 50 Lbs weight. Restrictions pertain primarily due to dimensions of baggage handling equipment and aircraft baggage containers. Primarily the size limits ensure that bags carried on board can be stored below seats or in overhead compartments. USA HR 2870 (June 2009) restricts carry on to 56 x 45 x 25 centimeters (22 x 17.75 x 9.85 inches), but airlines set maximum sizes smaller to ensure baggage fits into the spaces on their aircraft. Passengers may also carry on one of the following small items: purse, briefcase, notebook computer, or tote bag. Weight restrictions may apply. See FAA
